"Near me" SEO: how to rank for proximity searches

The short version

You cannot rank for 'near me' everywhere. Widen the area where you are the answer using categories, reviews, city pages and local links.

"Near me" is not a keyword you optimise for. It is Google reading the searcher's location and answering with businesses close to them. You will never rank for "plumber near me" everywhere, because the answer changes for every person who types it.

What you can do is widen the area where you are the answer. Here is how that works and what actually moves it.

HOW "NEAR ME" RESULTS ARE DECIDEDProximity is a ranking factorGreen: you rank top 3Amber: you slip to 4-10Grey: you are invisibleYou cannot move your address, but you canwiden the green zone with reviews, categories, city pages and local links.
A real geo-grid scan: each dot is your rank from that point in the city.

Why you rank across town but not downtown

Proximity is one of the strongest local ranking factors and you cannot change your address. A geo-grid scan makes this visible: you might be number one within two miles of your office and invisible five miles away, for the exact same keyword.

You cannot move your address. You can widen the zone where it still wins.

That is not a broken profile. That is proximity working normally. The goal is not to beat it, it is to earn enough relevance and prominence that your green zone stretches further out.

The levers that widen your radius

Primary category. The strongest relevance signal available. Match it to the exact service you want the near-me calls for.

Review count and velocity. Prominence lets you outrank closer competitors. A business with 120 recent reviews regularly beats one three miles closer with 20.

Local landing pages. A real page for each city you serve, with genuinely local content: neighbourhoods, local jobs completed, area-specific problems. Not one template with the city name swapped.

Local links and citations. Chamber of commerce, local sponsorships, trade associations, local news. These tell Google you belong to the area, not just that you claim to serve it.

Service area settings. Set them to where you actually work. An inflated radius does not extend rankings and can hurt trust signals.

What does not work

How to measure it properly

Checking your own phone tells you almost nothing: results are personalised and anchored to where you are standing. Use a geo-grid scan that samples dozens of points across your service area. It turns "are we ranking?" into a map you can act on, square by square.

That grid is part of every free audit we run, alongside your top 3 competitors. The ongoing work behind it is our local SEO services.
