Perplexity cites 2-3 sources per answer. Rank in classic search first, then make your pages liftable: question headings, direct answers, FAQ schema.
Perplexity answers questions by reading a handful of sources in real time and citing them inline. Unlike Google, there is no page two. You are either one of the citations at the top of the answer, or you do not exist for that query.
That makes Perplexity SEO a different game than classic rankings, and a much less crowded one. Here is how it actually works and what to do about it.
How Perplexity picks its sources
Perplexity runs live retrieval: it searches the web, pulls the strongest matching pages, and synthesizes an answer with citations. Three things decide whether your page gets pulled:
There is no page two in Perplexity. You are a citation or you are invisible.
1. You already rank somewhere. Perplexity's retrieval leans on conventional search indexes. Pages in the top 10-20 for related queries get retrieved far more often. Classic SEO is the entry fee.
2. Your page answers fast. Perplexity quotes passages, not pages. A direct answer in the first two sentences under a question-style heading gets lifted. A 300-word intro before the point gets skipped.
3. The engine can parse you. Clean HTML, real headings, FAQ and Service schema, and no bot-blocking. Check that PerplexityBot is not blocked in your robots.txt.
The Perplexity SEO checklist
Structure every important page so a machine can quote it:
- Question-led H2s that match how people actually ask ("How much does roof repair cost in Texas?")
- A direct, factual answer in the first sentence under each heading, with specifics: numbers, prices, timeframes
- FAQPage schema wrapping your real FAQs
- Author and business info visible: engines prefer sources with a clear entity behind them
- Fresh dates: Perplexity favors recently updated pages for evolving topics
Why local businesses win here early
When someone asks Perplexity "who is the best HVAC company in Boise", it has thin material to work with. Most local sites are unquotable. The one contractor in town with structured, fact-dense pages and consistent citations becomes the answer by default, and stays there.
This is the same pattern we run as an AEO agency: make the page liftable, make the entity clear, then track citations monthly. Perplexity is one engine in that program alongside ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, covered in our full AI SEO services.
How to measure it
Ask Perplexity your money questions monthly ("best [trade] in [city]", "[service] cost in [city]") and log which domains it cites. We do this at scale for clients and took one brand to 740+ tracked AI mentions. If your competitors are cited and you are not, the gap list writes itself.
